Does surgery for piles result in loss of control of stools ?
Whenever a patient is subjected to an operative procedure for any anorectal conditions the first step is to stretch the anal sphincter gently till it admits 2 or 3 fingers. This is known as anal dilatation. This procedure is learnt by surgeons in their training period under supervision of seniors. During a surgical residency a surgeon will perform and teach to juniors this procedure hundreds of times and hence it is very unlikely that incontinence will occur at the hands of a trained surgeon.
Sporadically, patients develop incontinence after a procedure if inadvertent over stretching is done. This problem is so peculiarly unpleasant that it is a sensational news in the patients family and acquaintances and spreads reasonably fast and wide leading to adverse publicity that "piles operation leads to incontinence".
In fact almost each and every case we have operated had this doubt which we could satisfactorily explain.
